Sun Safety Policy Day Nurseries
Introduction
Garnier Ambre Solaire factor 50+ will be applied to children within the care of Wise Owls. Parents are welcome to provide an alternative should they wish; this must be named and a minimum of factor 50. Garnier suncream is hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin.
At Wise Owls Childcare we have a duty of care to keep children safe and healthy. In summer parents must apply the first layer of sun cream at home before they attend the nursery. Our practitioners will apply sun cream 20 minutes before going outside to ensure the cream reaches full effectiveness by the time the children are exposed to the sun. Children are encouraged to apply their own sun cream (age appropriate) with support from staff if needed. The sun cream will be applied to areas not protected by clothing such as face, ears, feet and backs of hands.
Parents must provide children with a named sunhat throughout the summer months. This must be a wide brimmed hat that shades the face, neck, and ears, neck flap hats also encouraged. Named sunglasses may also be provided. Parents should ensure children wear lightweight, loose fitting and breathable clothing that covers the child’s shoulders (no strappy tops). Parents must provide shoes that are fitted securely around the foot.
To be a role model, staff should also apply sunscreen and hats to model safe behaviour.
Wise Owls Childcare adhere to the following sun safety tips:
- Monitor the UV rating before proceeding outside
- Our staff will risk assess before proceeding outside
- Spending time in the shade between 11am – 3pm if required
- Covering up with suitable clothing
- Use at least factor 50 sun cream
- Our staff will ensure the children stay hydrated throughout the day and always have access to drinking water, encouraging regular drinks every 15-20 minutes
- Re-apply sun cream for longer periods outside (every 2 hours)
- Staff will monitor weather conditions, alerts and risk assess in line with Adverse weather policy.
