Sun Safety Policy Clubs

Introduction

Parents are required to provide the club with suncream, this must be named and a minimum of factor 50.

At Wise Owls Childcare we have a duty of care to keep children safe and healthy. Parents must apply the first layer of sun cream at home before they attend the club. The sun cream should be applied to areas not protected by clothing such as face, ears, feet and backs of hands.

Parents must provide children with a named sunhat throughout the summer months. This must be a wide brimmed hat that shades the face, neck, and ears, neck flap hats also encouraged. Named sunglasses may also be provided. Parents should ensure children wear lightweight, loose fitting and breathable clothing that covers the child’s shoulders (no strappy tops). Parents must provide shoes that are fitted securely around the foot.

To be a role model, staff should also apply sunscreen and hats to model safe behaviour.

Wise Owls Childcare adhere to the following sun safety tips:

  • Monitor the UV rating before proceeding outside
  • Our staff will risk assess before proceeding outside
  • Spending time in shaded areas
  • Covering up with suitable clothing
  • Use at least factor 50 sun cream
  • Our staff will ensure the children stay hydrated throughout the day and always have access to drinking water, encouraging regular drinks every 15-20 minutes
  • Children will be reminded to re-apply sun cream for longer periods outside every 2 hours
