This risk assessment is used to identify and manage any potential hazards within the nursery environment before the nursery opens each day. The designated member of staff responsible for opening the nursery must complete the required opening checks to ensure the setting is safe and secure for operation.
Opening Up Risk Assessment – Step-by-Step
Step 1: Opening the Building
The building must be opened by a member of the Nursery Management Team (Nursery Manager, Deputy or Room Manager) before employees and children arrive on site.
Step 2: Complete the Risk Assessment
Management have 15 minutes to complete the Opening Up Risk Assessment, checking that the site is safe and ready to open.
Step 3: Communicate Any Risks
Any risks or issues identified during the opening check must be addressed where possible and clearly communicated to all staff before the nursery day begins. Nursery Management must share a post on Famly newsfeed for all staff, outlining the identified risks, any additional precautions required and any changes to the usual routine. The same information must also be communicated verbally to the team to ensure all staff understand the risks and the measures needed to maintain a safe environment.
Step 4: Escalate Where Necessary
If a risk cannot be safely resolved by Nursery Management or impacts the nursery’s ability to operate safely, this must be escalated to the Managing Director or Operations Director for further guidance and support.
