This risk assessment is used to identify and manage any potential hazards within the nursery environment before the nursery closes each day. The designated member of staff responsible for closing the nursery must complete the required closing checks to ensure the setting is safe and secure before leaving the premises.
Closing Risk Assessment – Step-by-Step
Step 1: Closing the Building
The building must be closed by a member of the Nursery Management Team (Nursery Manager, Deputy or Room Manager) once all employees and children have left the site.
Step 2: Complete the Risk Assessment
Management must complete the Closing Risk Assessment before leaving the premises, checking that the site is safe, secure and ready to remain closed until the nursery reopens.
Step 3: Communicate Any Risks
Any risks or issues identified during the closing check must be addressed where possible and recorded within the risk assessment. Any outstanding risks, issues or actions that may affect the safe reopening of the nursery must be communicated to the member of the Nursery Management Team responsible for opening the nursery, including any additional precautions required or changes to the usual opening routine. The most appropriate method of communication for the circumstances must be used to ensure the information is received before the nursery reopens.
Step 4: Escalate Where Necessary
If a serious or significant risk is identified and cannot be safely resolved before leaving the premises, or that may prevent the nursery from reopening safely, this must be escalated to the Managing Director or Operations Director immediately for further guidance and support. Any additional instructions or actions arising from this escalation must be communicated to the member of the Nursery Management Team responsible for opening the nursery, using the most appropriate method to ensure the information is received before the nursery reopens, unless otherwise advised by the Managing Director or Operations Director.
