Safer Sleep Process – Refresher Training

Creating ‘A safe space to play, explore and grow’

Annually all keyworkers need an observation completed by their Line Manager that the safer sleep process is being completed thoroughly – any areas of concern the Educator must receive refresher training on the process and a further observation until practice is safe and process 100% followed.

Checks and Process when putting a child down to sleep:

Does the Keyworker check the room temperature to ensure it remains between 16-20 degrees C.D
Does the Keyworker check the sleeping area for any hazards (Cots are kept free of clutter; no cot bumpers are used; comforters are provided when required)
Does the Keyworker check all spaces around cots and sleeping mats are kept free of hanging objects i.e. hanging cords, blind cords, drawstring bags?
Does the Keyworker place the child/baby to sleep on their back?
Does the Keyworker ensure that the child/baby is appropriately dressed for sleep to avoid overheating; clean, light bedding/blankets are provided?
Does the Keyworker ensure all children sleeping on floor mats sleep are head to toe adjacent to each other?
Does the Keyworker ensure the Babies/toddlers are never put down to sleep with a bottle to self-feed?
Does the Keyworker ensure that any baby who falls asleep, whilst being comforted by a Keyworker, is transferred to a safe sleeping surface to complete their rest?

Sleep check observation:

Does the Keyworker check each sleeping child every 10 minutes (5 minutes for under 6 months) as per the policy?
Does the Keyworker ensure all children sleeping on floor mats sleep are head to toe adjacent to each other?
Does the keyworker check the child for any change to position? (if a baby has rolled onto their tummy, they should be returned to their back. Once a baby can independently roll from back to front and back again, they can be left to find their own position)
Does the Keyworker check the rise and fall of the chest?
Does the Keyworker check there are no risks in the room, ensure nothing is covering their face ie. Comforter?
Does the Keyworker check that the room still remains at a good temperature?
Does the Keyworker check that the child is still sleeping safely and there are no risks?
Does the Keyworker record the sleep check on the digital system?
Does the Keyworker have good communication with colleagues about any concerns observed?
