The Silver Lining - An interview with Tanya Galitzine, Director Wise Owls Childcare

The Silver Lining - Tanya

On 16th March 2020 life as we know it came to a sudden halt. How did that feel for you as the director of a childcare business?

A couple of weeks before lockdown we had know idea what was to come. We had implemented changes in our day nurseries, preschools and clubs like hand sanitiser and deep cleaning but it didn’t really hit me until lockdown that people were getting very ill and that we were facing a grave situation.

Like everyone, we had about two day’s notice and it sent us into a spin. Almost overnight, we received lengthy policy documents containing new regulations and procedures that we had to implement immediately. I’ve run Wise Owls for 20 years and this was the first time I had ever thought - I’m not sure I want to do this anymore. At this stage, I kept reminding myself why it was so important. With NHS staff on the frontline working so hard to keep us all safe, it was critical that I stayed strong for my team so we could continue to work for our local communities and provide an essential service.

Nursery achieves green flag for going green

Wise Owls - Children holding Eco-Schools Green Flag

Wise Owls Farm View Day Nursery in Reading has achieved their long-term aspiration of gaining Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation after successfully completing the seven important steps in the Eco-Schools framework; a framework designed to empower and motivate young people to improve environmental awareness in their school, childcare setting, local community and beyond.

Some of the necessary steps to eco-schools status were undertaking an environmental review of the nursery, writing an action plan, informing and involving the nursery community and forming an Eco-Committee made up of children and adults responsible for driving environmental issues within the nursery.

Wise Owls settles in to the Braywick Leisure Centre in unsettling times

Braywick Leisure Centre - External view

When Tanya Galitzine, founder of Wise Owls Childcare celebrated her new childcare Nursery in the heart of Maidenhead 18-months ago, the last thing she saw coming was a global pandemic.

Wise Owls Childcare, situated in the newly developed Braywick Leisure Centre in Maidenhead, stepped in to save the day in 2019 when Pixies Nursery was set to close in the Magnet Leisure Centre.

“The transition has been anything but smooth sailing with Covid-19, but I have been operating my childcare business for over 20 years so we just had to get on with it to make it a success. Despite the impact of the virus, many families still depended on us so it was important for us to maintain a high quality childcare service.

Keeping the experienced team from Pixies Day Nursery has been a real blessing as they are an exceptional team of carers and they’ve brought their own passion and love for childcare to the table”, says Tanya.

Wise Owls operates an affordable and convenient day nursery catering for children aged 8 weeks – 5 years old from 7:45am-6:15pm. The Nursery boasts brand new, top quality facilities and resources with a climbing castle, enclosed garden, dedicated messy play areas, treasure baskets, sand and water play and much more in a nurturing, homely environment. Come rain or shine, children at Wise Owls get to enjoy a daily walk in the nature park on their doorstep.

“I am so excited to finally own a Day Nursery in Maidenhead, it’s been a dream of mine for over 20 years. I love it, it’s unique, it’s cosy and just like a ‘home away from home’. I look forward to when we can welcome families into the nursery to see our wonderful space for themselves. We have other childcare facilities in and around Maidenhead that complement a child’s progression through early years and primary school.”
