Keypersons are required to change their key children at regular intervals throughout the day. This is learning experience for the child and the keyperson with bonding time.
The Nappy change area needs to be organised and refreshed regularly throughout the day to ensure it is stocked and ready to go.
Our sustainable process: Our Home-made wipes are to be used for wet and soiled nappies. Our homemade cream is to be used if required based on child information.
- Firstly, ensure the nappy change area is clean and tidy.
- Prepare yourself for the change by wearing the appropriate PPE (gloves/aprons) only 1 glove is needed for the hand that is dealing with the nappy change.
- Check the child’s nappy size and get the nappy ready along with any creams required
- Once all prepared collect the child you are changing
- Lift the child safely on to the changing mat, place your hand on their stomach to support them lying still
- Engage with the child throughout the nappy change – make this fun with singing and bond with them one on one
- Change the nappy – ensure you wipe the child’s full area from front to back and ensure the child is fully clean within creases.
- Dirty nappy is to be disposed of within the nappy bin before getting the clean nappy out.
- Place a clean nappy on the child along with cream (if necessary) ensure when the nappy is put on the child that you cover the full area and it is not put on too tight and is breathable
- Redress the child ensuring any vests are fully buttoned up
- Lift the child safely down from the changing mat
- Wipe down the changing mat and area ensuring it is clean and ready for the next person
- Place your PPE in the nappy changing bin
- Keyworker and child to wash hands after the nappy change process has finished.
- Ensure the records of nappy changes are on the digital system for every nappy change.
Safety risks
NEVER leave a child unattended on the changing mat, ensure full supervision at all times
EVIDENCE is vital that you have completed the nappy change and how many times over the course of the day by recording each nappy change on the digital system
Safeguarding
No unvetted adults are allowed to be within the toileting and nappy changing spaces
During nappy changing, children are in a vulnerable situation and safeguarding is critical.
- Children must be treated with dignity, respect and privacy
- Practice must balance privacy with supervision e.g within sight/hearing of others
- Staff must always use appropriate language and behaviour
- BE ALERT – this is a moment when children may disclose concerns or show signs of abuse.
- Any concerns must be reported to the DSL immediately.
