At Wise Owls the children’s safety is of paramount importance. When walking near roads or using public transport all staff must be aware of all the dangers that may occur.
- Ensure all children are wearing high visibility jackets before proceeding on the journey.
- Ensure all children have been informed of the outing and informed how to keep themselves safe
- Ensure a headcount is conducted
- When departing the setting ensure a member of staff is at the front of the line and one at the back, if there’s more members of staff then they can be in the middle of the line
- Make sure the children walk in pairs as far away from the road as possible
- If possible, hold the younger children’s hands and always have the children on the inside of yourself
- Ensure children are always on the inside of the pavement and staff on the outside
- Ensure children are listening to instructions when going to cross the road,
- Ensure all children are together and away from the kerb behind an adult whilst waiting to cross the road when it is safe to do so.
- Once it is safe to do so and the road is clear a member of staff will then walk out into the middle of the road and remain in the middle of the road until all children have crossed. The member of staff will observe the traffic until all children have crossed and will then join the end of the line.
- If crossing a car park look both ways and make sure there are no cars near you or reversing. All cross together safely.
- If using public transport (bus/train) ensure all the children remain at a safe distance away from the bus or train line until the bus or train is stationary. Ensure all children stay together and assist them onto the train/bus, always ensure all children are on safely and the last person to get on is a member of staff to check all children are on before departing.
- If you are in a rush to a destination walk quickly, however, avoid running to prevent accidents.
- Staff must head count the children every 5 minutes.
- All staff to be vigilant and use their professional judgement in any situations that can arise.
