Snowy Owls

Welcome to Snowy Owls

Our Snowy Owls room can accommodate 16 children between the age of 3 and 5 years old and our staff:child ratio is 1 to 8 in this room as children are becoming more independent. Children at this age follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Principles and participate in activities that will gently prepare them for the transition to school. Our team maintains a flexible routine to allow them to meet each child’s individual needs during this important stage of development.

The Nursery boasts wonderful facilities and resources including adventurous outdoor play spaces with an array of fun activities, an allotment where children learn to grow their own vegetables, dedicated messy play areas, sand and water play, cosy corners and much more. With beautiful woodlands on our doorstep, children also get to explore their natural surroundings.

Healthy, physically active children are more likely to be academically motivated, and physical competence builds self-esteem at every age. We have regular gym time sessions where the children learn listening skills and team work as they join in with group games. We aim to provide many different opportunities for the children to develop and experience the outdoor environment. We have a large sand pit, creative activities, footballs, bikes and scooters, a mud kitchen, a cosy home corner, a construction area, chalk boards, a wooden obstacle course and a bug area.

Developing Independence

At this age we focus on building the childrens' independence. The children have formed a council which gives them a voice on what resources they would like to see in the room and what activities they would like to do.

Developing independence is a vital factor in a child's development, and supports preschool children in becoming school ready. The Early Years Foundation Stage supports independence stating that every child should learn resilience, confidence and self-assurance. Children’s confidence grows as they learn how to become independent. As they begin to master new skills, they see themselves as being capable.

Meal Times

Meal times provide another opportunity for social interaction and independence. We encourage all Snowy Owl children to self-serve their own meals under close adult supervision. We aim to give the children as much choice as possible at snack time. Our caring team is always close by to lend a hand and encourage good manners.

School Ready

Every day the children practice phonics (phase 1 & 2) using fun and interactive games and activities. We want to instil in our Snowy Owls a lifelong love of reading so children have access to a library where they are encouraged to choose a book once a week to take home and share with parents.

Child Progress

Each child will be allocated a keyworker who they will build a close rapport with. The keyworker will provide daily written feedback on the child’s progress each day. Staff will provide verbal feedback to parents at the end of the day and will discuss your child’s progress each day. We foster an open and cooperative relationship with all parents to ensure we can nurture the needs of each and every Snowy Owl.

What is Provided?

Included within your daily childcare fee is breakfast, snacks, lunch and tea. We ask parents to provide a change of clothes (weather appropriate), and if required please provide nappies and wipes.

We accept 15 hour funding if your child attends 5 half days or 2 full days per week. We will allocate all 15 hours towards this cost and you would be required to pay the extra hours, and for food and consumables. We also accept 30 hour funding if your child attends 4 or 5 full days per week. For your ease we issue a new monthly payment that takes into account all of these factors so you will be fully aware of the monthly costs. If you would like funded only sessions we can only provide these if we have availability. In this situation, you may need to cover consumable costs. For this option please contact the office and speak to a member of staff. You will be required to fill in a funded only form and may need to join a waiting list.

My daughter has been going to Wise Owls Day Nursery at Abingdon nearly a year now. We are so happy with the care and support that she gets. She has learnt a lot since being there and her social skills are incredible! She is always happy and has a lovely relationship with the staff that work there. The communication between staff and parents is great, we always get feedback at the end of the day and the staff are always so positive and welcoming.

We are very pleased with Wise Owls Nursery. Our daughter is so happy going in each day and seems to do so much in a short space of time. The staff are passionate, diligent and knowledgeable. As parents, we feel our daughter is being very well looked after. She has made lovely friends and is thriving. In the context of COVID-19, we feel very at ease with the precautions and procedures in place

My son has attended the nursery since he was 8 months old, he is now in pre-school and will be attending his first year at big school in September. I cannot recommend the team at Wise Owls Abingdon enough. They have brought my son to life. He is so happy to trot off into his class every morning and see all his friends. The team haven't just helped with my son's early education, they have been the biggest help and support for me and my husband as parents. Thank you for being the best and we will miss you, come September.

I couldn't be happier with Wise Owls as a nursery. We have been with them for the last 4.5 years and they have changed a lot over this time and only got better. Our daughter was particularly clingy and had bad separation anxiety. The staff always put us at ease and helped her to settle, which was really important to us as first-time parents. She is now at school and often talks about how much she misses nursery. My son still attends Wise Owls and is the polar opposite of his sister. They have done a fantastic job of helping him to potty train recently, in no time at all. He loves nursery and runs in every morning without looking back. All the staff are fantastic but a particularly big shout out to two members of staff, in particular, who have been with us from near the start - they are superstars. Thank you to all the staff at Wise Owls for doing such a good job at looking after our babies for us and filling their days with fun.

Both our children go here full-time, 5 days a week. We're really happy. It's a lovely nursery in a lovely setting. The scale of the nursery is what first attracted us - it's smaller and a more intimate than how I imagine other local nurseries must be. Also, less of a corporate feel than Milton Park. Everyone really does know everyone else, like a little community. The staff are fantastic, I couldn't speak more highly of them all. Our kids talk about them all the time at home, and obviously feel very safe and happy at nursery. The staff are brilliant at talking to us about our childrens' needs, how their day was, ideas for their development, etc. This nursery has given our kids wonderful friends, brilliant experiences, aided their development and social skills, and helped ready our eldest for school. She's only just turned 4 and she's reading full sentences!
